It is easy for me to rail against the uglification of life–from the the multiplication of mcmansions to the destruction of natural habitat to the lighting up of the night sky. It is easy for me to notice (and comment upon) only the ugly and not search out the beautiful.

But yesterday I flew from the Okanagan to Calgary. We lifted out of valley cloud into clear blue sky and a view of white tipped mountains, treed valleys with curling white rivers that from the height together looked like an enormous fossil fern frozen in time. The beauty was overwhelming.

In this coming year, let’s find beauty around us.
Better still, let’s make beauty around us.

Or be beauty.
